Mamas & Papas Urbo2 Stroller Review

urbo2-stroller21

I got tons of emails over the last few weeks asking me to review Mamas&Papas Urbo2. Sorry it took me so long, I have been crazy busy lately.

I’ve also promised you to do a comparison between Urbo2 and Armadillo Flip XT which will be out soon.

The Urbo2 has received a complete facelift and now is one of the hottest strollers on the market.

Wondering what’s so great about it? One of the best features of this stroller is the reversible seat with a deep one-hand recline that is suitable for a newborn.

The seat is very roomy and has super plush padding. It also can become a travel system or you can turn it into a bassinet by replacing the seat with a matching bassinet. Perfect for a newborn!

Mamas&Papas have also raised the frame of the stroller a little and added front-wheel suspension making the ride super smooth. Despite the small wheels, it handled bumps very well.

The narrow frame and small footprint make it very easy to maneuver in tight and crowded places even with one hand. The fold is even more compact than on Nuna Mixx, so you should be able to fit it even in the smallest trunk. The canopy now is really big and has a mesh panel for better ventilation.

Many parents complained that Armadillo models don’t have a bumper bar. Well, Urbo2 does! It’s a very nice leather-covered swing-away bumper bar. And talking about the looks, isn’t Urbo2 stylish?

The colors are pretty, the faux leather bar looks classy, and the fabrics and metal frame feel well-made and high quality. Amazing!

Urbo2 also features an adjustable leg rest, flip-flop-friendly brakes, an automatic lock, and an adjustable leather-covered handlebar. This baby weighs only 20 lbs!

All these updates made Urbo2 a great stroller for an urban lifestyle. This could be easily your ONLY stroller. The travel system and bassinet options make it perfect for a newborn. Take it to the park, mall, or a stroller around town.

OVERALL

I gave it 5 out of 5 stars because I think that Mamas&Papas did a great job updating it. This could be one of my favorite strollers.

There are a few things of course that could make it even better like being able to fold it with the seat in parent-facing mode, a larger basket, and larger wheels.

You can get Urbo 2 in one of the six beautiful colors for around $599. You can also get a matching bassinet for around $250.

Take a look at this stylish couple! The baby is not even 6 months yet and this mom is so skinny already… does anybody else think this model doesn’t have kids? LOL.

I absolutely love Donna Wilson! She is a British designer who won many fans around the world with her colorful knitted creatures and striking fabrics.

Her handcrafting techniques like felting, knitting, and wrapping make her products feel so familiar. Luckily, Mamas&Papas have used one of her designs on Urbo2 making it truly a fashion statement.

Features

CANOPY

Mamas&Papas know how to make a great canopy. This one goes down all the way to the bumper bar (yes! Urbo2 has a bumper bar included) providing full coverage. It has a new mesh panel that you can unzip for better air circulation on a hot summer day.

I am glad they’ve added a mesh panel since this is one of the main complaints from parents. It can get a little hot in the summer under that canopy. The canopy is also thinker now thanks to the extra hood lining protecting your little one from any sunlight.

There is also a large peekaboo window with magnetic closure (no noisy Velcro. Hooray!) There is a little loop on the canopy that you can use to hang a toy for your child.

BUMPER BAR

INCLUDED! It has a swing-away bumper bar covered with leather-like material giving this buggy a luxury feel. It’s now located at a better angle (which is 2.5″ inches higher than on Urbo) for easier ins and outs.

I have to admit, I love having the bumper bar. When kids are young they can use it to pull themself up and when they are older it’s a nice extra safety feature that prevents them from jumping off the seat.

My daughter is 2.5 years old right now and I almost never use the harness anymore. I just put her in the stroller and she holds on to a bumper bar. I don’t know why Mamas & Papas couldn’t put it on Armadillo models.

I mean, Armadillo Flip XT is one of my favorite strollers, but it does not have a bumper bar. You should see how many emails I got from parents asking me if the bumper bar is important. It is just such a pain in the behind to put a harness on your toddler every time.

A lot of parents who absolutely love Armadillo go with a different stroller because of the bumper bar. Thankfully, Urbo2 got it!

urbo2-stroller15

SEAT

It has a reversible seat that is 12″ with a 20″ seat back and a measurement of 24″ from the back of the seat to the top of the canopy. I love that you can see your little baby for the first few months.

Very soon you will need to flip the seat because your baby is getting bored looking at you and wants to see the world. Oh, they grow up so quickly!

This roomy seat has a deep one-hand recline that goes to almost a flat position suitable for a newborn. The seat can accommodate a child from birth and up to 50 lbs.

What I like about this seat is that you can create a bed-like environment for your child by lifting the leg rest up and fully reclining the seat. There is plenty of room for your child to stretch and take a long comfortable nap. Also great for quick diaper changes!

I think that a flat recline is very important even for an older child. Many luxury strollers like Uppababy Cruz have one-piece seat that is always in a sitting position.

The seat has very nice plush padding to make your child extra comfy. BTW, the seat is much more upright from the previous model and it’s also located now 1″ higher from the ground bringing the baby closer to you.

Not as important, but worth mentioning is that the back of the seat is now black to complement the rest of the finishes.

You can also convert it into a travel system by replacing the seat with an infant car seat or convert it into a pram by replacing it with a matching bassinet.

urbo2-stroller16

urbo2-stroller13

FOOTREST

There is an adjustable footrest that goes up and down providing your little rider with more room to stretch his little legs. Makes diaper changes much easier!

urbo2-stroller8

HANDLEBAR

It has an adjustable telescoping handlebar that is covered with super nice leather-like material just like the bumper bar. LOV it!

It also comes with a run-away strap that has been added as an extra safety feature. I personally never use it so not a big deal for me.

urbo2-stroller11

HARNESS

The seat has an adjustable padded 5-point harness with a center release button. I like how the material on the padding matches the canopy.

The buckle is a puzzle piece so it takes time to align all the pieces before you can lock it. It’s annoying in the beginning but once you get a hang of it, it’s not a big deal.

urbo2-stroller3

BASKET

The basket got updated and now is bigger and better supported. It is still a medium size, but I was able to fit my large diaper bag in it. It is very easy to access from the back or the sides.

You can even get into it from the front when the seat is fully reclined. In the world of baskets, it’s OK. Don’t expect to go grocery shopping with it.

urbo2-stroller9

WHEELS

It rolls on four hard rubber wheels with a 6″ wheel in the front and 7″ wheels in the back. The front wheels are swivel but can be locked straight for rougher terrain. The front wheels now have a quick-release button for easier cleaning and storage.

I really like the silver rims that look very stylish and make it stand out. The maneuverability is great! Very easy to push with one hand even fully loaded.

I tried strolling in the city with it and it handled bumps and uneven surfaces pretty well considering the small wheel size.

The old model had only a rear-wheel suspension, but the new model has also a front-wheel one. Since the wheels are pretty small, the added suspension helps a lot to smooth out the bumps.

urbo2-stroller17

BRAKES

The easy-to-spot red brakes are located near the rear wheels. They are flip-flop-friendly now so you won’t scratch your shoes or toes.

FOLD

You will need both hands to fold it, but it’s very easy. Make sure your seat is in the front-facing mode first. Next, push two buttons on the sides and collapse it down till you hear the click of the automatic lock. Surprisingly the fold is very compact.

The folded dimensions are only 11″H x 21″W x 33″L which is even more compact than Nuna Mixx 18.6″H x 23.2″W x 35.5″L. Now, of course, Mixx has larger wheels and a larger basket, but other than that it is very similar to Urbo2.

Urbo2 also has a standing fold that is not being advertised by M&P probably because it’s not very stable.

urbo2-stroller7

urbo2-stroller14

ACCESSORIES

It comes with a new redesigned rain cover that fits better and looks nicer.

It also comes with an insect net. This included insect net that also doubles as a sleeping shade, and is conveniently stored underneath the leg rest in a zipper pocket.

It easily attaches to the canopy and the sides. The fit also has been improved.

urbo2-stroller19

BASSINET OPTION

You can turn your stroller into a stylish pram by getting a matching bassinet. This bassinet is one of my favorite. I really like that it holds its shape without sagging down and wrinkly material like many other bassinets have.

The metal detailing on the sides makes it modern and luxurious. You can also use it at home as an extra sleeping place for your child.

urbo2-stroller10

FOOTMUFF OPTION

The fabric of this footmuff resists wind and water helping your child to stay warm and comfy. I also like the ultra-soft fleece lining that feels so nice and plush.

urbo2-stroller12

TRAVEL SYSTEM OPTION

You can convert it into a travel system by getting an infant car seat adapter. It works with the most popular brands like:

  • Graco SnugRide Classic Connect 32/Connect 35
  • Primo Viaggio SL/IP
  • Cybex Aton/Cybex Aton2/Cybex AtonQ
  • Maxi-Cosi Mico/Citi/Pebble/Cabriofix
  • Nuna Pipa
urbo2-stroller18

Cons

-Medium size basket. The basket is not as large as on other full-size strollers, but I was able to fit my large diaper bag in it.

-Small wheels. The wheels are on the smaller side (6″ and 7″) when it comes to a full size stroller, but maneuverability is really great even when it’s fully loaded. So while I would like to see a slightly larger wheels, 7″ and 9″ would be great, this buggy handles bumps pretty well.

-Seat position when folding. The fold is very easy, but the seat has to be in the forward-facing position if you want to fold it with the seat attached. I find this annoying.

Urbo2 Updates

Since there have been a lot of different updates, I decided to list them separately one more time:

  1. The quick-release button on the front wheels.
  2. Added front-wheel suspension.
  3. New mesh panel in the canopy for better airflow.
  4. The seat is now 1″ higher from the ground.
  5. Extra hood lining in the canopy to protect you little passenger from sunlight getting in
  6. Larger and better-supported basket so you can fit more stuff.
  7. Easy to spot red brake pedals that are flip-flop friendly now. No more shoe scratches!
  8. Better bumper position. It is positioned 2.5″ higher now for easier ins and outs.
  9. The back of the seat is black now to complement the rest of the finishes better.
  10. Run-away strap has been added to the handlebar for parents to have more control.
  11. The foot plate is rounder and easier to grip now.
  12. Reconfigured 5-point harness for easier footmuff and liner attachments.
  13. New rain cover that fits and looks better.
  14. The footmuff now provides better coverage and includes fleece lining.
  15. An insect net that also doubles as a sleep shade is now included and is hidden underneath the leg rest in a zipper pocket.
  16. The high position of the bassinet. The bassinet now sits 2″ higher on the frame bringing your baby closer to you.
  17. The bassinet has also been improved and now is 10% roomier inside.
  18. Despite being roomier inside the bassinet is now 25% more compact and can fit into the smallest trunk.

  1. Hi Katrin! I am a FTM and am considering getting the Urbo 2, the Armadillo XT, or the Uppababy Cruz. We currently live in NYC but plan to move to the suburbs within a year. The reasons the Cruz is currently my number 1: bumper bar and snack tray, one handed fold, large basket, supposedly very good customer service. I LOVE the style and finishes on the XT and the Urbo 2 (navy is my favorite) but am concerned about the XT because no bumper bar and no snack try, and am concerned about the Urbo 2 because no snack tray, bulkier fold, and the two handed fold. What do you think? which stroller should we go for?

  2. Sorry- just realized that the Flip XT and the XT are two different strollers- we are considering the Flip XT

  3. Hi Katie. Just like you said, the main difference between the Flip XT and Urbo2 are the wheel size, fold, basket size and the bumper bar. The rest is pretty much the same. The snack tray is really not a big deal. My daughter never puts her food on the snack tray anyways. She likes to hold the container or a zipp bag in her hands and eat from there. I used snack tray only like twice in two years. I guess it depends what’s more important for you. Also take a look at Sola2 MTX – it’s very similar to Urbo2, but has larger basket and all-terrain wheels. It also has bumper bar and a very similar fold as Urbo2. The navy color is sooo pretty! I would go for one of the models from Mamas&Papas and take Cruz out of the running.

  4. Hi Katrin,

I am interested in a Mama’s and Papa’s stroller but I am so conflicted about which one to get! I keep going back and forth. I will be using it for long walks but also want to have it be easy to get in and out of a car and not be too bulky. At first I was interested in the Flip XT which fits all my needs except for a bumper bar. Now I have been thinking about the Urbo2 since it does have one, but I am concerned about the wheels/suspension. I also ready feedback that it doesnt last very well and that the metal starts to get very scratched up. The Sola2 MDX looks great too except that it seems too bulky and heavy for regular car use. Also, I hate that the bassinet on all Mamas and Papas strollers isn’t supposed to be used for regular overnight sleeping. It seems so wasteful to spend the money, but I dont want the baby in a car seat so much. Any other strollers I should be looking at that fits my needs? Thank you!!

  5. Hi Katrin..
Which one do you think is sturdier, more comfortable and smoother on the road between Armadillo Flip (not the XT), Sola 2, or Urbo 2?

  6. Hi, We are considering the Urbo 2 and the Uppababy Cruz. The one thing I like that the Uppababy has the snack tray. I am not sure how important that really is, as this is my first child. We have a Peg Perego infant seat 3-35. I am assuming when it says the Primo Viaggio works with the Urbo2, that means the Peg Perego infant seat correct (with an adapter of course)? I really love the look of the Urbo2 and haven’t been that crazy about the Uppababy look, but of course functionality is most important. The storage bag below the seat is also pretty important to me too. It doesn’t have to be huge, but its got to hold a good bit of stuff. Please let me know your thoughts. I really can’t make a decision, but that may also be because I’m pregnant! Thanks for any help!!

  7. Hi Leslie. You should get the stroller you really like. The snack tray is the least important feature in the stroller. Haha. I used snack tray probably twice in 3 years. It gets dirty quickly so you have to wash it before putting the food in. Also, your child’s hands will probably be dirty so you have to wash his/her hands too. Than they will be dropping food on the floor. I wouldn’t worry about snack tray at all. I usually give my child a zip bag with food or a plastic container. Both stroller are great. The wheels on Curz are larger, so that’s a plus. But, I like the recline on Urbo 2 more because it’s a flat recline. Hope this helps!

  8. Hi Katrin,
I love your reviews on the Mamas & Papas strollers and you’ve helped me narrow my choices down to the urbo2 and the armadillo flip xt. They both have the parent facing option, mesh panel for air circulation, and large canopy. I feel like I am leaning more towards the urbo2 because the bumper bar is a big plus for me. The only thing that is holding me back from the urbo2 is I heard many complaints about it being a hassle to fold and unfold as well as the frame feeling flimsy. I travel once a month and I need a stroller that can take a beating from gate checking it every flight and be easy to unfold because I tend to travel alone. Which stroller do you think would you think would best fit my travel needs?

  9. Hi Katrin, I need your advise. I am considering to buy Britax Affinity or Mamas & Papas Urbo 2. Which one do you think is better? Thanks for your help.

  10. Hi, Katrin. I would like to ask about the weight of urbo2, is that up to 15kgs/25kgs? Because at mamas&papas website the weight up to 15kgs.

    Thank you,
    Sheila

  11. Hi, my daughter is 15 months and I’m looking for a stroller that she can grow with. I really like the Urbo 2 but I’m concern with max weight restrictions. will the Urbo 2 be good up until my daughter is 3? I don’t want to continue buying strollers. And have you heard any negative reviews due to max weight or wheels? Thank you

  12. Do you know if the wheels can be replaced if they get worn down? Does M&P offer replacement wheels? Thank you!

  13. Hello Katrin,

Loved your review as it included many points of the stroller. I own an Urbo2 but the main issue for me is that I find it too low from where I stand to the baby- is it adjustable?

    Thank you,
    DJ

  14. Hey Katrin! I need some information. I have been searching for weight limit capacity on Urbo2 and I have found conflicting information. On mamas&papas official website and also according to the sales representative in mamas&papas retail store the weight limit is 15kg/33lb but on many sites and in youtube videos it is recommended upto 50lb/22kg. And also in this review it is mentioned 50lb. My son is already 24lb/11kg and I wanna buy this stroller but I am really confused about weight limit because if it is 15kg then it won’t last me more than a year. Please help me with true information. Thanks

  15. This is a silly question…but what makes a brake flip-flop friendly? I tested the Urbo2 in a store and had to use the top of my foot to disengage the brake to pull it up. I always assumed “flip-flop friendly” meant using just the bottom of your foot to press the brake forward and back. What am I missing?

    Thanks!

  16. Hi Katrin!
My daughter is 11 ‘months and I’m looking for a stroller that she can grow with. I’ve had multiple strollers so far and end up regretting them. As of right now I am using the Uppababy vista but I’m looking for something smaller for on the go. My options are uppababy g luxe due to there amazing features ( canopy, foot adjust ); m&p urbo 2 ( everything about it) I’m concern about the weight I want to make sure I won’t have a problem with carrying it on the train etc ; summer 3D lite I am concern on the padding & canopy. I would really appreciate your feed back ! Thank you so much

  17. Hi Valerie. From your list I would choose G-Luxe for sure. Top quality. Great design. Urbo 2 is fancy but not as practical for public transit.

  18. Hi Katrin,

Is there a snack tray that works with the Urbo 2? I’d like to replace the bumper bar with t

  19. Hi,

Can you please confirm if Urbo2 is compatible with Primo Viaggio car seat. If it is,c can I use it with Mamas and Papas adapter, as when checking at the store, the urbo2 adapter box only Cybex and MaxiCose models written on it.

    Thanks
