The Stokke Trailz is a luxury all-terrain stroller with a reversible seat that is designed for active parents who like to spend a lot of time outdoors no matter the season or terrain.
As you’ve probably guessed from the name of the model you can easily take it off-road and tackle the trails.
Uneven city streets, snow, sand or gravel wouldn’t be a problem when you are strolling with this buggy. These large all-terrain air-filled tires can handle anything!
Keep in mind, there is a big difference between foam-filled and air-filled all-terrain wheels. The air-filled wheels have much better natural suspension and provide a much smoother ride than foam-filled.
For those parents who mostly walk on even surface, foam filled tires will be enough. But, if you want to take it to the sandy beach or snowy street, it’s better to have air-filled tires.
The Trailz comes with a reversible seat, but can also be converted into a travel system or a pram. The seat can accommodate a child from birth and up to 45 lbs. The included infant insert reduces the seat depth and provides more support for a small baby.
A lot of parents ask me if bassinet is really necessary when you can put a child right into the seat. In my opinion, you can get away with an insert and use the seat instead of the bassinet.
But, the bassinet comes really useful during cold winter months. If you had your child in the fall, you might want to get a bassinet because it provides a lot more cover and protection from the cold wind than the stroller seat.
Also, you can use it as an extra sleeping place at home for your baby. It was very convenient to be able to take the bassinet off the stroller and bring it inside of the house after my baby would fall asleep during our walk outside. So, to answer the question it’s not necessary, but a nice option to have.
If you are planing on going grocery shopping with Trailz, you will be happy to see a HUGE basket that can fit a lot of stuff. And since this buggy is pretty heavy, you can also hang your bags off the handle bar without fear of tipping the stroller.
It also features large canopy with a mesh panel, adjustable foot rest, one-step brake, adjustable 5-point harness and easy fold. As I’ve mentioned above, this buggy is not light. Together with the seat, it weighs 30 lbs.
On the bright side, you will never have to lift it up with the seat since you need to remove the seat before folding the frame anyways.
OVERALL
I gave Trailz 4.5 out of 5 stars because this is a very high-quality stroller with great wheels. It didn’t get a perfect score because I think that this stroller is not for everyone. You will need to have a big trunk and probably s big house to store it.
If you live in a city in a small apartment and use public transit you should probably get something lighter and more compact. There are also a few areas of improvement.
I would like to see a simplified fold instead of multi-step two-piece fold, lighter weight, the swing-away bumper bar instead of just removable bumper bar, the canopy could be a little larger, and would definitely add an automatic brake and a standing fold.
The price of this baby is not cheap! You can get it for around $1,299 on Amazon. It comes with a rain cover, a bug net, and a bumper bar. Needless to say, you will probably need to get a lighter stroller for traveling and running errands so budget that in.

Features
CANOPY
The canopy has two panels and a small pop-out visor. I think it provides enough shade in the most upright position, but if you recline the seat, especially with a smaller baby, the sun might get in.
Of course, you can reverse the seat, but I would love to see a third panel added or a larger sunvisor instead. If you look at the competition like Bugaboo Buffalo or Nuna IVVI, you will see much larger three-panel canopies.
BTW, Bugaboo has recently updated canopy on all of its models to include a third zipped-in panel. I think that Stokke needs to do the same update.
While there is no peekaboo window on the Trail’z canopy, there is a zipped-in mesh that you can use as a viewing window to look at your child. Also, that mesh comes very useful when you need to improve air circulation on a hot summer day.
HANDLEBAR
The adjustable handle bar goes from 34″ up to 44″. Shorter and taller parents will be happy. This is a very tall handlebar because most handle bars go to only 42″. This ergonomic handle bar is covered with solid foam that looks very durable and should definitely last.
SEAT
The seat is pretty roomy with plenty of headroom for an older child. It is 14″ wide at the shoulder level and about 11″ wide at the bottom with 21″ seat back with a measurement of 24″ from the bottom of the seat to the top of the canopy.
The coolest thing about this seat is that it is positioned higher on the frame than your average stroller bringing your child closer to you. You can also use it instead of a high chair at the restaurant.
The seat has three recline positions in the parent facing mode and only two positions in the forward facing position. I wish it had three positions in both modes.
Let’s talk about recline. I was a little surprised NOT to see a lever recline like most reversible seat strollers do. Instead, Trailz has a little grey button on the side of the seat that you need to push and hold while you recline the seat to the desired position.
I would like to see a one-hand recline. What’s up with Stokke and weird reclines? Why not just do the ONE-HAND lever recline that parents are used to? On the bright side, the recline is very deep so you can put your newborn in it. The seat limit is 45 lbs.
INFANT INSERT
It comes with an infant insert that provides extra cushion and reduces the seat depth to fit the smallest babies. You can safely use it for a newborn instead of the carrycot.
BUMPER BAR
INCLUDED! Unlike Stokke Scoot that has no bumper bar, Trailz comes with a removable bumper bar. Surprisingly it’s NOT swing away. I mean, how hard is it to make it swing away?
It might seam like a small thing, but sometimes you need get your child in and out quickly and sometimes you need to do it with just one hand.
HARNESS
It has a padded adjustable 5-point harness with a center release buckle that is hard to undo. Your 3-year-old will not be able to escape. The harness has 3 positions and can be easily adjusted from the back of the seat.
FOOTREST
The adjustable foot rest has a very unique design. It’s attached to the fame of the seat and slides up and down on the same angle unlike other footrests that you can lift up and down to provide extra flat surface for you child.
So, as your child grows you can slide it down to provide more leg room. One great thing about this footrest is that you can remove it completely for easy cleaning.
Overall, it’s a good footrest, but I still prefer the one that provides more stretching room for younger babies.
BASKET
This is one of the BEST baskets on today’s market. It’s huge and very easy to access from the back and the front. It can carry up to 22 lbs. Great for grocery shopping!
You can fit two largest diaper bags in it. And, since this buggy is so heavy, you can hang another diaper bag on the handle bar without it tipping back.
WHEELS
The all-terrain wheels are probably the best feature of the Trailz model. These are air-filled rubber wheels that can handle all kinds of terrain including snow, sand, gravel, and grass.
You can easily take it off-road or take if for a long stroll in the city where the roads are often worth than trails. It will handle sand in the summer and snow in the winter with not problems.
The front wheels are 9.5″ while the rear wheels are 12″. The front wheels are swivel but can be locked straight for rougher terrain.
The rear-wheel suspension makes the ride much smoother. I would like to see front-wheel suspension added.
BRAKE
The one-step brake is located near the right rear wheel. It’s NOT flip-flop friendly.
FOLD
Stokke says that it has an easy and intuitive fold. Haha! The fold is easy but requires multiple steps and both hands. I don’t think this is very intuitive. First you have to remove the seat.
Next, to fold the frame you need to pull on two levers on the frame and slide the handle down. Then, you need to bring the handle bar all the way down to the lowest position, fold the back of the basket, pull on two different levers on the frame and fold the frame in half. Phew!
There is no automatic lock so the wheels might unfold on you when you are trying to load it into the trunk. There is also no standing fold. Together with the seat it’s a very bulky fold. I hope you have a big trunk! The folded dimensions are: 37.5″L x 24.4″ W x 19.5″H
ACCESSORIES
It comes with a rain cover and a bug net.
BASSINET OPTION
You can turn your stroller into a stylish pram by replacing a seat with a bassinet (sold separately). This bassinet has soft interior and hard-shell exterior designed to keep your newborn cozy and safe.
You can use it from birth and up to 20 lbs. The canopy has three panels and a small sunvisor.
There is also a zipped-in mesh window that you can open up to provide more air circulation on a hot summer day. There are two handles for easier carrying that are hidden in the zipper pockets on each side of the bassinet.
TRAVEL SYSTEM OPTION
You can turn Trailz into a travel system by replacing the seat with an infant car seat. It works with the Stokke Pipa by Nuna car seat without adapters.
You can plug the car seat right into the stroller. You can also use it with most popular car seat like Maxi-Cosi, Nuna, Cybex, Peg Perego with a purchase of an adapter.
Cons
-Very bulky fold. This buggy is super bulky and super heavy at 30 lbs! The good thing is that since you have to remove the seat before folding, you will never have to lift he whole stroller up. Instead you can just lift the seat which is only 9 lbs and the frame which is only 21 lbs.
-Bumper bar. The bumper bar is removable, but not swing away. Why not? I definitely expect a swing-away bumper bar from a luxury brand like Stokke.
-Inconvenient recline. To recline the seat you need to push the button with one hand while adjusting the seat with another. I would like to see a one-hand lever recline instead.
